What is Nostalgia Super Stock Racing?

Drag racing popularity grew dramatically in the late 50s, from where it was with Hot Rods, by the introduction of Super Stock racing. Car manufacturers learned that the cars winning on Saturday and Sunday — were selling on Monday — so the the horsepower race really took off. Racers like Ronnie Sox, Dick Landy, Arnie Bestwick, Don Gay and Grumpy Jenkins were filling the stands as Mopar vs. Ford vs. General Motors. Starting in 63, the sport started to push the envelope of what was Stock — and FX (Factory Experimental) was born. By 1970 — the sport branched into two different directions with FX evolving into Funny Cars and SS evolving into Pro Stock — and Super Stock took a back seat.

Nostalgia Super Stock is a tribute to the Old Super Stock and FX racing of full size cars with the biggest and baddest motors that ran from around 1960 to 1967. It also incorporates 68 and 69 when the smaller cars like the Hemi Dart and Cuda and the AMX made a brief entrance at the time of Super Stock's swan song.

In a nut shell — NSS cars are the same type of cars that ran in the early 60s, with only a few rule changes — mainly for safety. You still have to run the skinnier slicks, have a full interior (2 front seats, carpet, headliner, full dash…), can't change the steering, have to look stock under the hood, and use an engine from the family available when the car was built. One of the big changes is that the cubic inch displacement of the engines is not a tech item — so while 11-seconds was fast in the day — high 8s and low 9s are what you see from the fastest NSS cars running. Be sure to check the rules for details.

What is Nostalgia Muscle Car Racing?

Nostalgia Muscle Car is similar in many ways to NSS with the rules, but larger number of smaller cars models and small blocks, make it a little easier to afford. Many use it as a stepping stone and later build and race a NSS car. It started where any 2-door 8-cylinder engine American car could run in the class — with an engine type available in that car when built. IE — since a Plymouth Duster never came from the factory with a Big Block — they have to run small block Mopar engines.

The class tries to keep a little closer to the street driven look — and the rules on things like ladder bars, 4-link, fiberglass body parts, etc are more strict than NSS. Recently — some of the sanctioning bodies have dropped the 2-door requirement. Like NSS — the cars run all Motor and no power adders — unless it came that way from the factory. IE: a Supercharged 64 Studebaker GT Hawk can run a Paxton Supercharger like the one that came on the R3 and R4 engines. In keeping with the street appearance — most organizations limit the racing graphics and stickers to the glass and not on the paint.

Who runs this site and why?

This site is owned, operated, and administered by the Old Hippie — Dave Schultz. Dave currently runs a A/FX 65 Dodge Coronet by the name of Big Red Ram. Nis number is 7601. Dave got interest in NSS racing in 2003, and has used his web design skills to help promote the sport to where it grows in popularity. Dave finances the expenses of maintaining this site through calendar and T-shirt sales; and banner clicks (don't be afraid to click the banners of interest to you!). His time is out a labor of love for the racing class.

Hey Man — I've got a question not answered here.

Then post it over at the Driver's Lounge and it will get answered there — and most likely appear here for those in the future with the same question.
