Pop & Pup's Milan Recap

We left the shop at 9am in Richmond, TX on Wednesday, and drove the 700+ miles to Jackson, TN for the night. On the road again at 8am Thursday morning we hooked up with Doug Duell in Louisville in the afternoon. After dinner in a truck stop north of Dayton, OH; and we made it to the track's staging area late Thursday night.

Recapping my season thus far, I started off running the Vitamin C, and ran great at Bradenton, FL — Qualifying #1, but getting pushed back in the Semis of Eliminations for 6 drops of clean water. Back home we pulled the motor and replaced a freeze plug in one of the heads that had a pin hole leak. In Atlanta I qualified well — but went -.002 red in the first round of Eliminations. I found out I had an E-Coli infection just before the Maryland race — and I only went there to qualify the car with one pass (to not lose bonus points) — but decided to run all of the Qualifying and Eliminations once there. The car ran well in Qualifying, but on Sunday morning it was strangely 1/10 off in the first round of Eliminations. Back home Dallas found the timing off a little and we attributed that to be the problem. Still hurting from E-Coli, we went to the race in Joliet. The car was running slow in the two Time Trials, and I had to unbolt every ounce of extra weight to get it to run the number in the second Time Trial. In the first round of Eliminations, the car ran the number — but the motor didn't sound right so I shut it down after I crossed the line. After towing it back to the pits, we found water coming out of the number 3 spark plug hole. Pulling the heads found water seeping in the #3 cylinder. Obviously this was the problem in Maryland, and this was my third first round loss. Back home we found the block was not repairable (for racing) and a search began for a good 426 Max-Wedge block. I had surgery 10 days before the Dave Duell Classic in Bowling Green, but I couldn't miss this race as it is my favorite. Dallas couldn't come to this race — so I ran his car, which I last ran in 2006 before making it a NSS car for Dallas to run. I won class for A/NSS on Saturday — but lost a close race in the 1st round of Eliminations against Donnie Wilson for the Big Show on Sunday. Since I was so far back in the points (10th of 81), I decided to start running the Texas Whale the rest of the year to work the bugs out of this completely new race car. So the Whale was in the trailer for Milan, along with the black Coronet that Dallas runs.

The track opened at 10AM, and we were pitted, had established credentials, and teched the cars in by 1PM. At 3PM I ran my first pass and the car was a little slow because of a bad burnout.

For the second (and last Time Trial) at 5PM, I made a adjustment to the shocks settings, launched lighter, and change my shift points a little. That got me a little closer to my 10.0 Index.

That put me to where I wanted to be. The first round of Qualifying was to be at 7PM. I put 60 pounds in the car to compensate for the .05 too fast and the anticipated weather change. We wound up sitting in the staging lanes for a lot longer than I had planned for as the temperature dropped — and was about 5 pounds too light to not break out.

Pulling onto the trailer — the car sounded like Hell. Fast forward an hour and we found all of the Torque Converter bolts loose. Further, the flexplate was hosed. So at 2AM — the transmission was finally out of the car, and the flexplate unbolted.

At 7AM I am running around the pits looking for a Flexplate. Never found one, so when Mancinni Racing opened at 10AM, I ordered a plate, the crank/converter bolts, and had a friend in Detroit (thanx Doc) bring them to the track. I missed the 2nd Qualifying at 10AM. By 2PM, we threw in the towel because the transmission side snout on the converter was chewed up (indicating I needed a transmission bushing/seal) and the crank side snout on my replacement converter wasn't milled properly for my crankshaft. So the car was put on the trailer.

Dallas qualified #13 of 21, and ran Barry Camp in the first round, and Barry bested him. Doug Duell had a better than 300 point lead — but was also knocked out in the first round. The 2nd in Points (Steve Wilson), 3rd (Kurt Neighbor), and 4th (Doug Poskevitch) all advanced through both the second round and into the Semis — where Kurt ran Steve, and Doug had the bye. Poskevitch and Neighbor met in the finals — with Neighbor winning the Wally. Now you can throw a blanket over 1st through 4th, with Neighbor now most likely in the lead. The double–points finals in Indy ought to be very interesting.

On the way home, we dropped the Whale off at Doug Duell's chassis guy in Evansville. He'll deal with the transmission/converter, change the gears from 4.86 to 4.57, fix the brakes, weld on some tie down loops, and align the front end — as he had an immediate opening and was on our way home, and then again back to Indy.

All in all, the Whale drove well and has far fewer wrinkles than most brand new race cars. While I'm disappointed in not making it to Eliminations — I'm not disappointed in the car. It feels very comfortable to drive and I think I'll be running it in the FX Indexes next year.

While I have no chance for the Championship in 2011 — I intend to be a spoiler at Indy with this car, and make a hard run for the ring with it in 2012.

Joliet 2011 Recap

Dallas and I left Tuesday morning for Joliet, IL to get in line for a hard pit space, as they’re gone quick in this NMCA/NMRA combined race. We arrived at the track’s staging area at 3:30PM Wednesday — about 12 rigs back in line. The track started letting the drivers onto the track at about noon Thursday. We had our pit set up, credentials established, the cars teched in, and back on the trailer by 4PM.

My biggest complaint with Chicago is the tight pitting, and the lack of enforcement of diesel generator exhaust routed into the pits of others. For the third year in a row — a different NMRA toter and trailer
combo has been pitted to my right and their two diesel generators have pumped exhaust into my pit 24/7. For four days we couldn’t sit in
our pits, work in our pits, turn off our generator and open the windows of the coach, or cook on the grill because of the carbon monoxide. All of the NSS racers I see at the track show the proper consideration to get and install the exhaust extensions sold at Camping World. The NHRA has a policy for the safety of people in the pits — but the NMCA/NMRA do not enforce one. I’ve made my Complaint, however my last one was completely ignored. But I digress!

Not a good weekend for me personally. Back in Mechanicsville, my Vitamin C qualified well, but was more than 1/10 off Sunday morning in the first round of eliminations — handing Kurt Neighbor an easy win. In the first Time Trail at Joliet I was almost 2/10 slow. I took all of the weight out of the car — and was still 1/10 off in the second Time Trial. For the last Time Trial I bumped the timing from 32 to 35 and ran my number. In the first round of qualifying the motor didn’t sound right as I crossed the line, and so I shut down and had towed back to the pit. I thought it was a rocker or push rod — but all looked well when we pulled off the valve covers. Then we noticed a drop of water from the #3 spark plug.
Pulling the plug had about an ounce of water come out. We hoped for a blown head gasket — but after pulling the head and dropping the #3 piston in the hole — we saw water dripping from the cylinder wall on top of the piston. So I was done for the event. After being pushed back in the Semis in Bradenton for 6 drops of clean water, going -.002 red in the first round of Atlanta, and the car not running the number in the first round in Mechanicsville — I don’t have a prayer for the Points Championship this year. Not a good year at all for me.

The Blow by Blow reporting from the track and the final qualifying ranking, ladder and the round results can be found at the Joliet Live thread at the NSS Forum. Fast Forward to the Finals — it was the battle of the Dougs — Doug Duell and Doug Poskevitch, with Duell turning on the “Stupid Light” and giving Poskevitch the win.

Dallas’ car was also having a problem running the number — even with the seat removed. On the way home we dropped it off in Evansville, In to have the hood (Dallas forgot to put the hood pins in at Mechanicsville and the body guy down sucked at fixing it) properly mounted, and look at why the Vacuum Pump is blowing oil everywhere. Dallas will go up to run the car in Chandler in a couple of weeks, and bring it back to have the hood prepped and painted. I’ll most likely run it at the Dave Duell Classic — as the money for FX is big.

We arrived home at Monday night at 10PM, and by Wednesday 10AM the engine from the Vitamin C had been pulled and disassembled. By noon, the block and crank were at the machinist to be Sonic’d and Magnafluxed. We’re hoping that we can resleeve the block and reusing the crank, pistons, cam, and crank. I was planning to run the Texas Whale next year, and was planning to freshenup the Vitamin C this year — and have it as a backup to the cars Dallas and run next year. It looks like that we’ll be doing the Freshen up now. I ran the Vitamin C this year because it is dead nuts on consistent, and I felt my best chance for a ring — as opposed to T&Ting a new car. Now that my chance for the ring is hopeless (unless I was to ACE the next three races and three people fell on their faces – Fat Chance) I’ll use Milan and Indy to work out any wrinkles in the Whale.

The below are a few NSS photos from Joliet — you will find 80 photos by clicking here.

The NMCA Series is About To Begin

The long term weather forecast for the race weekend in Bradenton looks good. Partly overcast and temperatures in the high 70s/low 80s. Hopefully the farmer at the top of the track will reconsider plowing into the track’s head wind, reducing the size of the sand dunes forming at the top of the track.

Dallas and I will being leaving for our 1100 mile trip Wednesday morning, so we can get to the track on Thursday afternoon and pay the great value of an extra $90 to park before it gets impossible to maneuver our 80′ rig into a pit large enough for us.

An Bradenton Race update thread has been created at: http://nostalgiadragracers.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=nss&thread=670&page=1 — where those attending the race with Internet access through a cell phone, tablet, or notebook can keep interested parties not attending up to date. Hopefully those attending will keep everyone updated with who made it, who’s in and out — and photos (from their camera phones) of qualifying, ladders, times slips, embarrassing moments — and other general updates of the trials and tribulations of their race team.

Hopefully, the NMCA will have the Live Timing set up, and those interested can have their computers notify them when NSS comes to the line. If you’ve never scoped out Live Timing — it is pretty cool.

So if you’re going to be at the race and have the ability to keep people updated, please do so in the thread. If you’re interested in how things are going for NSS — check the thread.

More On 00 Joe Ewing's Injury

I'm sure most of you have heard (was reported on both NSS sites and the NSS forum) about 00 Joe falling off his motorhome and breaking the ankle of one foot and the heel of the other. The first surgery was about two weeks ago.

Double O Joe will be having surgery on the other foot this coming Monday. Therapy will be a very long process. He will be in a wheel chair for some time, before he can even get to the stage of using a walker.

I'm sure Joe has the best wishes of all Nostalgia Super Stock Racers.

While NSS Racers and Nostalgia Drag Racers has all of this news, and has announced events like the Dave Duel Classic — it appears so few NSS racers check the site to keep up to date with what's going on. Quite a few members are asking questions long ago answered on these sites. I guess you can inform NSS Racers about where to find information regarding news and events specific to them — but you can't force them to read it. It would help if those of you informed about .00 Joe, the Dave Duell Classic, the 40+ NSS races listed in the events column of Nostalgia Drag Racers, the new NMCA points structure, rule changes, and other NSS News to contact those who are in the dark — and let them know what's going on. It is amazing how many haven't heard any of the recent news — and are calling to ask questions long ago answered. Need to get the grapevine working for those who are not Internet savvy.

The car was bought in October 2003 on eBay, and transported from California to Texas. Dave’s wife and yard man laughed hysterically when it was unloaded and Dave stated he was going to turn it into a Nostalgia Super Stock race car.

The car was pressure washed and stripped, then carted to friend, Ken Presley, in Conway, AR. Ken sandblasted the body, repaired the rust issues, and sprayed the car in primer.

It was then taken to Texas Thunder Performance in November 2004, where it spent about a year in the back shed waiting its turn. In January 2006, it made its way to the shop, where it was converted to a 2-door wagon, using a 1960 Plymouth 2-door post as the donor for the middle section. 1960 was the last year that Plymouth made a full-size 2-door wagon.

After the conversion to a 2-door wagon, work on the 4-link and cage began in November 2007.

In early 2009, Lexan was cut and fitted. Molds were made of the fenders, hood, bumpers, and tailgate — and fiberglass parts pulled from them.

With an iron block, 440-1 head, 540ci Diamondback Engine, this car had a best of 9.375 @ 145 MPH in the quarter. It now has a a BRAND NEW Aluminum Block, 572-16 head, 580ci Diamondback Engine with an estimated 100HP more and 100 pounds less. The motor has not yet made its initial break-in Full Passes — but it is expected to bring this car into the 8s.

Mark Artis of Texas Thunder Performance did all of the chassis, body, and most of the assembly; and Damon Kuhn of Diamondback Engine built the engine, front end, and rebuilt the transmission. It would cost well over $100,000 to build a NSS car exactly like this.

I am moving into a 60 Plymouth Wagon for my NSS racing — and would like to see this car land in good hands. It is a very fast all motor car — and not for the inexperienced or faint of heart. It is turn-key ready to race in the Nostalgia Super Stock FX class with NMCA and most other organizations that race NSS. It needs absolutely nothing. Chrome Moly Chassis easily certifies for 8.50.

The price is $65,000 firm.

The Texas Whale is 1960 Plymouth Suburban 2-door wagon is being prepared for Nostalgia Super Stock Racing.

The process began when I bought the wagon in California in 2003, and took to a friend (Ken Presley) in Conway, Arkansas to have it stripped, gutted, blasted, repaired, and primed. It then went to Mark Artis at Texas Thunder in 2004. There it was converted into a 2-door wagon (Yes, Plymouth made over 500 1960 Plymouth 2 door wagons), and converted into a NSS legal race car. Coil-over 4-Link, Ford 9″ rear end, chrome moly cage, and front end rebuild were all performed by Mark Artis. Molds were made for the hood, fenders, bumpers, and deck lid — and fiberglass parts pulled from them. Mark performed all of the paint, body, assembly and interior — and made the custom headers for the Diamondback 580ci engine built by Damon Kuhn.

Mark Artis with his standard pose prior to the Whale Migrating South

Yesterday I picked the car up from the shop and brought back to my shop — where the last 100 or so hours of making ready to race will be performed. The below photos were taken just prior to my loading the car into the trailer for the trip home.

Mark Artis at Texas Thunder has been assembling this car for me for quite some time — and it is rounding third and heading for home.

The below photos were taken by Pat Artis.

There is a big scramble to get the car finished, down to Houston, and to the tack for the Houston race. It won’t be ready to go down the track if we make that deadline — but it should be ready for others to check out. It will take the rest of the winter to handle the finishing details and TT for racing next year.

By: Dave Schultz ~ June 8, 2010

The Schultz family left on Wednesday, June 2nd at 9:30 AM and arrived at the track at 7PM Thursday. We spent the night in the staging area outside the track. We bought the Vitamin C (63 Savoy) in a single trailer — as the black 65 Coronet that Dallas was going to campaign still won't run — and we'd run out of time.

The gates opened at about 10AM, and we quickly got set up, established driver credentials, and tech'd the car in. At 3PM they opened the track to Time Trials. On my first and only TT pass — the car did a 11.170 with the same 160 pounds that was bolted in from Bowling Green. The car was running the number at Bowling Green — but the air was horrible (about 4500') at Maple Grove. Both Doug Duell and Barry Camp moved up to C/FX as their cars couldn't do a B/FX number. Many of the cars bumped to one slower number. Worse yet for me was that the car was leaking water badly as I returned to the pits.

The water was coming from the left side of the block — which put a lump in my throat. Closer inspection found it was coming from the left center steel freeze plug of the 413's block. We drained the coolant and filled the plug with blue Permatex –as that's all we could find. We were hosed for any more TT and the first round of qualifying was to start at 7PM. We did unbolt 80 pounds from the left side (I'm a "Full-Figured" guy so we were heavy on the left side as it was).

When they called NMC (NSS Generally follows next) to the lanes, we filled the radiator with water — and it leaked just as bad. I made the quick decision that I needed to be counted as being there (after 3200 miles travel to/from the race) and that I should be counted Friday night — as there was a 40% chance of rain Saturday and Sunday. I drained the water, started the car cold and coasted to the top of the lanes. I waited towards the end of NSS to let the car be as cold as possible and then coasted downhill to the burnout box and started the car up there. I did a quick and light burnout, made an easy 11.09 pass, and it shut down at the top. Dallas towed me back to the pits in Barry Camp's (who is dogging me for $100 to use it) ATC. The car is an iron head car and I felt sure I didn't hurt anything as the car was stone cold when I did the burnout, and the temp gauge (albeit there was no water to measure) didn't exceed 200 degrees. The .09 had me 9 of 17 cars.

Kurt Neighbor had some emery paper, and "Mr. 4-Speed" Marty had some JB Weld. Dallas sanded the inside of the freeze plug and found a pinhole right at the edge of the sides and bottom, and pushed in some JB into it, then a thick smear in that area of the plug — before putting the car away for the night. Andy Warren and his father tried to find a rubber adjustable plug on the way to the motel — but all auto parts stores were closed.

In the morning we pushed the car out of the trailer and filled with water while crossing fingers. No Leak. Dallas took the car for its morning warm up and got the water to 170 before returning — no leaks. I borrowed a 6 pound cap from Fred Rager. Two hours later (all of which I spent in a lawn chair staring at the ground under the engine) we were called to the line for Q2 — still no leaks. I did a 11.05 — which had me in 8th of 17. No leaks when I returned to the pits from Q2. The 3rd Qualifying occurred at about 7PM Saturday — and I managed a 11.02, putting me 8th of 17.

On the above Qualifying, Kurt and Barry swapped — with Barry being the actual top qualifier on the sheet revised in the AM. Barry had his .003 first, but the computer initially put Kurt in the Top position for a faster MPH. MPH doesn't count in NSS — the first with the same low number does. In the First Round of Eliminations.

I was paired with Scott Griffith for the first round, and he couldn't make the call — so I got the BYE. Still no leak!

In the third round, the winner of Bates and I would get a Bye to the final. I choked! For the entire event I had very good RTs (.070 the worse) — but I red lit (first time in this car, and first time in almost a year) after staging too deep. I had been staging deep because this car reacts slower than my 4-speed car — and I want to leave at the same time on the lights as I normally do. The "All Ford" Semis had Neighbor over Posovitch and Bates with the Bye.

Neighbors' Mercury took the win over Bate's 67 Failaine.

This race had a very light turnout for all classes. Despite 422 again scheduling an event the same time NMCA is in the area (many say this isn't an accident – but I'm so far away from the NE that it doesn't affect me) NSS and OC were the only two classes to come up with more than ten cars. Speculation in the pits reasoned that the track is too long of a haul for most; the forecasted weather (although we were only down for a couple of hours — a recent NMCA record) had many stay home; the combination of Bradenton going to Monday, Bowling Green cancelled (along with the forecast) have many throwing in the towel for 2010; or that the first four races mean nothing for the points chase — or a combination or two/more.

For NSS, Chicago is scheduled the same time as the Chrysler Classics — so you can expect even fewer Mopars. Then one of Schneider's races (Cordova?) is scheduled the same time as Milan — and last year that siphoned off quite a few Mopars. NSS is getting to be a Ford thing with NMCA lately. We (Mopar guys) were outnumbered again this race.

This race report is obviously through my eyes. I am more than willing to post any of the reports of others on a Nostalgia Drag Racing class. The best thing to do it to document the chain of events to the race on the appropriate forum by creating a new thread like I did in the NSS Forum: http://nostalgiadragracers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=nss&action=display&thread=188 that anyone can post to — and then post a summary after event has ended. I'll then cut and paste it to the Nostalgia Drag Racers site.

I was up to Texas Thunder last week to pick up the Big Red Ram — after having some year end upgrades done to it, and to drop off the Black Coronet as a back up car for the events I’m running this year. It was also a good time for my new Crew Chief/Shop Rat to be introduced to the guys up in Frisco.

While there, I shot a couple of photos of the 60 Plymouth wagon that I’ll be racing in 2010 — and discussed with Mark fiberglass fenders, hood, deck and bumpers; paint; and the engine going into the car. The transmission/shifter is the one that just came out of the Red Coronet. Below are a couple of photos.
