For years Flying J was motor home friendly — and since many of us travel to races in a motor home — racer friendly. They have special motor home aisles that gave a cash price on diesel, have waste tank dump stations, and a rewards program that gave you a cent off per gallon.

About a year ago, they hook up with a MasterCard that gave discounts on fuel and credits for the restaurant when using the card at Flying J.

Then about a month ago they started charging to dump your tanks — the main reason most motor homes come to Flying J.

This weekend I bought about $1100 about in diesel traveling to and from the NMCA Milan race. All weekend long I couldn’t pay at the pump — and the idiots inside couldn’t figure out how to use my Flying J Mastercard.

Now I just find out that Pilot bought Flying J last week, the is no more credit for credit price, no more rewards program (and the $225 I had banked is gone), no motor home discount — and they’re closing the restaurants. All three $350 transactions was a 20 minute adventure inside with the Pilot, who in all three cases were total asses.

If you have been using Flying J for their Motor home friendliness — you may need to look elsewhere. I’m done with them. I’ll be canceling my MasterCard account with them too.

NSS Racing at the Lone Star Shootout

Killer Purse Opportunity as 100% Returned To The Drivers!

http://www.nssracing.com/images/NSS-Lonestar.jpg

The NMCA/NMRA didn't initially schedule for Nostalgia Super Stock racing at their Lone Star Shootout scheduled Nov. 12-14 at Houston Raceway Park. After some discussions, NMCA/NMRA has agreed to allow us to prove our interest in NSS being part of future Shootouts by returning to NSS Drivers as a purse 100% of  money collected from NSS drivers (and specifically not their crews) as their purse. Here's how it works:

  • Although Time Trials, Qualifying, and Eliminations are scheduled for Saturday  and Sunday only, the track will be open for parking/tech on Friday. It is strongly suggested you take advantage of that.

  • Admission for Car & Driver is:

    • Friday – Sunday $105

    • Saturday – Sunday $85

  • All admission for car and driver in NSS goes into a purse pool. Since the event begins promptly at 8AM Saturday — it is a given that most all drivers will be arriving, setting up, and teching their car in Friday so they will not miss any qualifying rounds Saturday. Therefore we'll use the amount of $100 as a round number for the example below — but it will be 100% of money actually collected for NSS Drivers that will be returned as a purse.

  • It is thought that the track will have its own racing on Friday night — and drivers can buy a tech card from the track, but if your trailer, racecar, or Motorhome spends the night at the track on Friday (even if you do not) — you will be considered to have arrived the day your car/trailer did, and that will be the amount collected from you.

  • For 24 or less cars, 100% of the NSS driver's admission will be distributed 50% to the Winner, 25% to the Runner Up, and the other 25% to those who didn't advance out of the Semis (12.5% if two drivers and the whole 25% if there was only one because of a BYE.) For the sake of argument, say that there were 20 NSS Drivers paying a total $2000 for NSS Driver's admission, the Winner of the event receives $1000, the Runner Up receives $500, and the Loser(s) of the Semis split the other $500.

  • For 25 or more cars, the Winner would get 45%, the Runner Up would get 25%, the Semis split 15%, and the quarters split 15%. As an example — if 30 NSS cars showed and $3000 was collected — the Winner would get $1575, the Runner Up $875, the Semis split (1 or 2 drivers depending on BYE) $525, and the quarters (2, 3, or 4 drivers depending on BYE) split $525. More drivers — more money AS 100% of the DRIVER's ENTRIES GO TOWARD THE PURSE. If we were to get 50 cars — there would be some killer purses for 8 of the racers.

If you have any questions — post them on the NSS Forum and I'll get the answers.

Let's make this a big race and collect a big purse by encouraging all NSS Drivers to enter. NMCA NSS Rules apply — but this is not a points race.

The weather is most often perfect in Houston this time of year — and there's a lot to do in the area for those who come early and make a vacation out of it. Galveston Island, NASA, The Boardwalk, ….

There are two NSS Races at Gateway in September and October.

Vitamin C Cartoon

Dover Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE: DVD) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Gateway International Raceway has notified NASCAR that it will not seek 2011 sanctions for its two Nationwide Series and one Camping World Truck Series races.

Vice President and General Manager of Gateway, Terry Harmeson stated, “This was a difficult decision in light of the many years of earnest and continued efforts on everyone’s part to develop a viable market for these events in one of our nation’s greatest cities. We remain committed to fulfill the balance of our 2010 schedule including our October 23rd NASCAR Nationwide race which will provide our fans the opportunity to see Danica Patrick compete here for the first time. We also plan to explore various ways to change the economics at Gateway both from the revenue and expense side.”

Denis McGlynn, President & CEO of Dover Motorsports, stated, “We have a group of extremely dedicated and talented employees who make Gateway a great destination and we deeply appreciate all the support we have had from the racing community over the years – from racing fans and drivers to sponsors, team owners and sanctioning bodies. However, economics dictate that we evaluate all of our options for this facility, including its possible sale.”

The MoparWiki

On Its Way To Become The One-Stop Information Reference For All Things Mopar

http://www.moparstyle.com/wiki/images/b/b7/Moparwikiexp.jpg

WIKI

A wiki ( /ˈwɪki/ WIK-ee) is a website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser using a simplified markup language or a WYSIWYG text editor. Wikis are typically powered by wiki software and are often used to create collaborative wiki websites, to power community websites, for personal note taking, in corporate intranets, and in knowledge management systems.

Wikis may exist to serve a specific purpose, and in such cases, users use their editorial rights to remove material that is considered "off topic." Such is the case of the collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia. In contrast, open purpose wikis accept content without firm rules as to how the content should be organized.

History

WikiWikiWeb was the first wiki. Ward Cunningham started developing WikiWikiWeb in 1994, and installed it on the Internet domain c2.com on March 25, 1995. It was named by Cunningham, who remembered a Honolulu International Airport counter employee telling him to take the "Wiki" shuttle bus that runs between the airport's terminals. According to Cunningham, "I chose wiki-wiki as an alliterative substitute for 'quick' and thereby avoided naming this stuff quick-web."

Cunningham was in part inspired by Apple's HyperCard. Apple had designed a system allowing users to create virtual "card stacks" supporting links among the various cards. Cunningham developed Vannevar Bush's ideas by allowing users to "comment on and change one another's text."

In the early 2000s, wikis were increasingly adopted in enterprise as collaborative software. Common uses included project communication, intranets, and documentation, initially for technical users. Today some companies use wikis as their only collaborative software and as a replacement for static intranets, and some schools and universities use wikis to enhance group learning. There may be greater use of wikis behind firewalls than on the public Internet.

On March 15, 2007, wiki entered the online Oxford English Dictionary. Some people claim "Wiki" also stands for "What I Know Is" but this is a false backronym.

MoparWiki

While WikiPedia is the most famous of on-line collaborative encyclopedias, MoparWiki wishes to focus on the single goal of ultimately becoming the best on-line reference with anything having to do with Mopar. Cars, people, racing, technical papers, parts, events, clubs, history, … even part manufacturers and sellers, or Mopar Magazines. Anything that has something to do with Mopar — should be included in the MoparWiki. That is the only goal and the only agenda.

Coincidentally, MoparWiki and WikiPedia use the same application to manage their wikis. MediaWiki is a software wiki package written in PHP, originally for use on Wikipedia. It is now used by several other projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation and by many other wikis.

Collaboration

Collaboration is a recursive process where two or more people or organizations work together in an intersection of common goals — for example, an intellectual endeavor that is creative in nature — by sharing knowledge, learning and building consensus. Most collaboration requires leadership, although the form of leadership can be social within a decentralized and egalitarian group. In particular, teams that work collaboratively can obtain greater resources, recognition and reward when facing competition for finite resources.

How this collaboration works with the MoparWiki might start with someone who reads a great article on a particular Mopar racer like Richard Petty, executive like Walter P. Chrysler, a car make like Dodge, or even a car model like the Mirada in a book, magazine, or elsewhere on the Internet. He might then go to the MoparWiki to see what was already written on the topic. If the wiki had already been started, he might improve on it with any information he just read, and post a reference to where he found the information. If the topic hadn't already been created — he would hopefully create the wiki, put as much of the information he had time to add, and post a reference. He might later revisit the wiki as he had time — and add more information from the article he'd read on the subject. Others would then visit the article — and they too might add any missing information they might have, and cite a reference to it. Yet others might clean up the typographical or spelling errors they might find — or clean up the format to be consistent with other articles in the MoparWiki. Sysops have the task of visiting Recent changes to look for Spam, trolling, or any vandalism to an article — and either delete the small violations or roll the article back to a previous backup for any major vandalism. He then bans the Vandal from ever being able to again access any site on this server. It is also the task of the Sysop to make notations asking for citation to some fact — or to post that a fact has not yet been verified. In time, a single article might have had 25 people collaborate with its creation and improvements.

How You Can Help Adding Context

The MoparWiki is in need of a lot of help at all levels — from contributor, to the director of Sysops, to PHP Programmer — for it to achieve its goal. This goal is to purely educate people of all things Mopar in a one stop location. Mopar might no longer be with us in the next few years, and this is the time to start to preserve history.

Help with the topic context. When you read an article on a mopar topic that interests you — please go to the MoparWiki and see if the article already exists. If it doesn't — please create it, and at the very least list the reference so another with an interest in the topic will have a reference to refer to. Better yet, at least add an introduction too. If the article has already been created — then see if your reference has information that should be added to the article — add it and the reference. If you see any typo, then correct it. If you question a fact — post so in the Discussion (link in the topics NavBar) page so that a Sysop can check it out. It you see vandalism — report it.

If you want to help and just don't know what topic to start with, do a search for your favorite Mopar car, event, vendor, or person — and see if you can improve the article with hard facts and references to those hard facts. If you don't have a particular topic on your mind but want to help — just go to a Random page.

If you are a registered member of MoparStyle, then you have the access required to create or edit an article. There is an excellent on-line Help area, and it is very simple to learn how to format text. The best place to start is to look at quite a few of the existing topics and get an idea of the layout of articles. This is the format we want to follow for all of the articles. Every user has their own User page (go the MoparWiki while logged in at MoparStyle — and you will see a link to it) — and this is a perfect place to play around a little to practice text formatting. Use your User Page to make you own little personal home page. Do what you what with it to personalize — but just keep it clean and free of hate.

Mopar Vendors

If you are a promoter of a Mopar event, a manufacturer of a Mopar Part, an editor of a Mopar Magazine, or anything like that — you are welcome to create of edit the wiki on your business. We're looking for facts, information and history — not for a big spam page of advertising. Tell us about your product, service, and give a link to your site for the hard arm-twisting  — but don't try to sell in the wiki. Inform — don't sell. It will be up to the Sysops to use their discretion on any editing out any spam that comes across like ten tons of garlic.

Sysops

For those who feel that they have a higher calling on the project — the MoparWiki needs a small group of Management Volunteers to become Sysops. A Sysop must first have demonstrated a a great desire for the success of the MoparWiki with his very active participation of creating, improving, and editing the articles. After a few weeks or months of doing so, if the active contributor feels the calling and would like to help in the management of the MoparWiki — use the contact form and throw your hat into the ring to be considered. We would ultimately like to have a core of about 6 active Sysops, and two Sysop Directors.

Not good chatter about the AHRA going on the racing boards

  • Gilliam canceled their AHRA affiliation, supposedly (so claims a track employee) because employees not being paid.
  • There are claims that winning drivers at Midland were told they’d get their winnings wired to them (we all know that generally means they’ll not get the promised purse — if any purse)
  • San Antonio (suppose to start today) was canceled “Due to rain” — while the weather reports show a nice weekend. SIR is a pretty nice 1/4 mile (getting rare) track with plenty of hard pits, and gave up their IHRA sanction to be AHRA. I wonder where they go from here to fix that?
  • Rumors are that Calgary is pulling out

I’ve not verified any of the above personally (except the San Antonio race) — but you can find the comments on many racing boards.

It would look like the AHRA’s 15 minutes of fame never came the second time around, and I suspect all news concerning the AHRA in the future is going to be very bad news for them. Building it and they will come — doesn’t work if you don’t have money to see it all of the way through. Hope and Change sounds good — but it takes leadership and a good plan.

I almost was going to run their series instead of the NMCA — and it looks like I came to my senses just in time.

Over the winter, I tried to get something going with the AHRA and NSS — and I thought it was a natural fit. However, I while I found Rod Saint (related to the original AHRA owner) to be a pretty nice guy — I felt Troy Moe (related to the more recent AHRA owner) to be arrogant and condescending. Only the Texas NSS drivers really wanted to take a chance with the AHRA — but I (in the end) told them that someone else needed to make it happen as I didn’t want to speak with Moe any further. I ultimately just sent Moe an email saying I was no longer interested in being the point guy in NSS discussions.

Too bad they couldn’t have been the Nostalgia Drag Organization that they gave the impression that they wanted to be. It appeared to have been a good concept on the drawing board — but most likely with the wrong people at the wrong time. The AHRA’s recent history in Seattle with charges of political corruption against the owners and inter-family lawsuits over ownership most likely didn’t help either. My personal bet is that you can stick a fork in the AHRA. I hope they at least pay the winning drivers and track employees. The last real AHRA owner (who owned it before Moe’s uncle made it a one race deal in Seattle) paid the drivers out of his pocket prior to throwing in the towel. My only business failure had me pay all of my bills prior to throwing in the towel — as it was the right thing to do — regardless of how painful it was to my family. I believe what goes around comes around.

The below Message is posted over at www.nssracing.NING.com site. It does not affect this site.

Some Very Bad News

A little over a year ago I discovered ning.com. It allowed people to build a group web site with features like personal blogs, photos, videos, event calendars, and a lot more. All of this was free — as they ran ads in the right side bar to generate revenue.

Sadly today they announced: New plans and pricing announced! We're focusing 100% on paying Ning Networks and will begin phasing out our free service in July.

So basically after a lot of time was spent putting together a site and generating membership — they now grab you by the balls and want up to $49.99 a month — or $400 a year.

Well I'm not going to pay it. I suggest that you immediately copy any context off this site that you want to preserve. Click here for the site that will replace this one. I'm currently looking at buying server side software that will give you all of the features you found on this site.

I'm sorry for this inconvenience — as I screwed up and trusted them.

There has been a lot of talk about states cracking down on racers traveling to events, and there’s a lot of confusion between fact and fiction. This was a discussion in the pits this last weekend in Bradenton — where for instance we discussed:

  • North Carolina has a law that no combination over 65′ is allowed to travel through the state. Last year Kurt Neighbor called the state was told to not even travel through the state. There were complaints that the law was hanging out at Zmax as the events ended — having a field day writing up very costly tickets to race rigs. Doug Duell tells me that Bruton Smith yelled and screamed loud enough and to the right people, to where this year they changed the law so you can be up to 90′ if you are traveling to a racing event. However, there is some question about if you are required to have a CDL.
  • In PA, the law was hanging out by the Maple Grove track and writing up tickets for not having a CDL if your trailer had more than two axles, or sponsor lettering, and if you fessed up that you were going to race where there was a cash prize to the winners.
  • Other states have combinations of the above plus are focusing on motorhomes with airbrakes, certain weights, etc…
  • Different states have different requirements for who stops at the scales. No longer cant you assume you can by pass the scales if you are a motor home or Non-commercial, as some states have length or weight limitations regardless of your Commercial/private status.
  • Some states make it necessary to have a CDL for a motor home — but the driver’s home state won’t issue a CDL without a tractor-trailer road test, which many can’t obtain the vehicle for the road test. The excuse that your state doesn’t issue or require doesn’t appear to make a difference to the unsympathetic cop writing the ticket.

Going to the Internet and trying to read the actual laws often causes more confusion than answers — as it appears that different statues for the same state conflict.

Often, you can call the state and get three different answers from three different people.

This is too costly to just blow off by telling others that you never had a problem or hadn’t heard of problems — and thinking “Private – Not Commercial” lettering is a free pass. The better way is to get the facts so you can get legal.

I’ve put together a forum with threads by state — which I’m hoping I can get racers with the facts will help out with. If you were stopped and found a violation that you weren’t previously aware of — please post the details in the thread for the state. If you called a state for clarification on if you are legal — please post their answer, and please ask for their name and post it too. Some may wish to print the thread when they travel through a state and are stopped.

The forum is located at http://nostalgiadragracers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=transporting and I’d sure think it would help racers if there was a place where racers from various forums could give other racers a heads up — so they can avoid travel problems.

Brand New Nostalgia Racing Site

There is a brand new Board dedicated only to Nostalgia Drag Racers at www.nostalgiadragracers.com/forums.

Now you might ask, why do we need another one, there was already one at www.OldHippie.com/forums, and you'd be correct — so a little history is in order. Back in 2004, there was a forum for NSS racing at MoparStyle. However, since that was predominantly a Mopar site — some of the Brand X guys wanted no part of it. There was also a board war about ten years ago between MoparStyle and Moparts. Memories are long for many people unable to move on (I have) ten years later, so a lot of the Moparts' Loyalists wanted no part of participating on a NSS forum, if it was going to be on MoparStyle.

So a couple of years ago, while in the process of redesigning both MoparStyle and Old Hippie sites, the NSS forum was moved to the Old Hippie board. Well that caused problems with others. The Old Hippie board has a lot of forums, hitting on a lot of topics. One of them, and frankly the most popular, is the political forum. That forum is lop-sided on the number of members Left vs. Right, and while it is very easy to avoid the political forum if you want to, many can't. In many cases if the racer is either apolitical, or on the other side of the majority of members in the political forum — they avoid the NSS forum too.

The best option was to create a site specifically for Nostalgia Drag Racers — of all makes and all classes, and get away from the non-racing stuff getting more action. This new site (and board) is not just for NSS racers — but for anyone running in any of the Nostalgia Drag Racing classes. I think that many of us have common interests and causes regardless of the class we run — and often attend the same events. So no matter the make of car/engine or the racing class of your Nostalgia Race Car — you will be welcome and as much a priority as anyone else.

The first few weeks of a new board are critical. People have a tendency of waiting for everyone else to jump in first — and then they will. Sort of like the baseball team that hasn't won in a couple of years not filling the stands until they are contenders — then everyone has been a fan since birth. Well if everyone does that — we just have a big Mexican Standoff, where everyone waits on everyone else to make the first move. That causes people to think the board is inactive, and they stop visiting.

So I ask that if you think it is a good idea to have a forum with the goal for Nostalgia Drag Racers to communicate; compare notes; and promote their type of racing to have more race in it, more events to run it, more people in the stands to see it, and for the purses to be bigger than they currently are — then I ask you to help with taking the lead and participating, so that the "Followers" will feel comfortable enough to also jump in.

Now I hear a lot from the older generation of the racers that they won't participate because they're Computer illiterate, or they associate this with some kind of tweeting of useless "I'm sitting on my porch" stuff. My answer to the Computer illiterate is that this is not Rocket Science. It takes 2 minutes to register to post, and my scared 77-year-old mother can post on a board. Challenge yourself to take the five minutes to learn something new. I'm amazed at how some people have the ability to learn how to tear down and rebuild a precision race motor, yet don't have the balls to learn something so easy on a computer. This is not "Chatting" or "Tweeting" or "Gossiping". It is a simple bulletin board of information pertinent to and of interest to Nostalgia Drag Racers. Try it — you'll like it!

I hope that enough people feel like that promoting our type of drag racing is a worthwhile venture — and will jump in and join the rest of us by actively participating in making this board a vehicle of advancing our sport. This does not replace any other board — just offers an additional place, but one that has the main focus of Nostalgia Drag Racers.

Hope to see you there. Please ask you friends to join you in making the board grow and promote Nostalgia Drag Racers.
