Gateway International Raceway

Diligent driving leads to victory for Lee

By Bob Wilkiewicz
Nostalgia Super Stock National Association

MADISON, Ill. – Driving in a range of consistent reaction times and taking advantage of slower responses by opponents, Albert Lee (Corda) of Elk Mound, Wisconsin won the Nostalgia Super Stock Eliminator title at the third annual Dave Duell NSS Nationals during Monster Mopar Weekend at Gateway International Raceway September 19-21, 2008.

Posting reaction times of .050, .027, .043, .025, .048 and .054, respectively, Lee (Corda) also received a red light victory in the second round on his way to the championship. Meanwhile, four of his opponents posted reaction times ranging from .107 to .218, including an average of .154 over the last three rounds.

Lee’s (Corda) 1964 Plymouth was also a consistent performer, running near the NSS/B 10.50 index when needed. His most difficult race came in the third round against the NSS/C 1964 Plymouth driven by Jim Guy of Hilliard, Ohio, who pressured the winner to a 10.501@121.95mph pass.

Damon Kuhn of Needville, Texas in his NSS/A 1961 Plymouth named ‘Fugly’ also took advantage of opponents’ mistakes to claim runner-up honors. He advanced via redlights in each of the first three rounds.

Then Kuhn picked up another easy win in the semifinals when Charlie Kuenster of Lancaster, Wisconsin also lit the red eye with his 1959 Chevrolet running in NSS/D. In previous rounds, Kuenster was close to the ‘Tree with reaction times of .043, .008, .002 and .030.

Kuhn posted a 10.004@135.18 in the second round for his best performance of the day.

Lonny Meyer of Noblesville, Indiana was the other semifinalist, running the Meyer Family Racing 1964 Plymouth in NSS/C.

Meyer posted runs of .017 and 11.010, .043 and 10.987, and .002 and 10.975 in the first three rounds. Then he received the benefit of a red light in the fourth round before falling to Lee (Corda).

The entry roster for NSS reached a new high for the event with 71 cars passing tech despite being two weeks later on the calendar and with two schedule conflicts drawing away a number of other NSS cars. The previous mark was 66 cars, set in 2007.

——————————————————————————

Paul Habura of Addison, Illinois set low elapsed time and top speed of the event for NSS in the ‘Keeping The Faith’ 1963 Plymouth Belevdere, which is an original factory Max Wedge car. In addition, the machine was remarkable in its consistency.

In the first pair down the track in time trials on Friday, Habura posted an 8.858@150.65. Then after going 8.872@151.10 during the second session, he ran out to an 8.867@151.66 on Saturday before class eliminations.

—————————————————————————-

Several other top driving performances were also seen during the event, including .001 reaction times by Jim Guy and Kurt TeVault (1965 Plymouth) along with an .002 from Dan Brewer (1964 Plymouth) on Friday. Brewer also clocked a .001 reaction time in the first round of Sunday’s eliminations.

On Saturday, Dennis Spurgeon (1969 Dodge Dart) and last year’s winner Russ Berens (1967 Plymouth) posted side-by-side .001 reactions followed with a .000 by Marty Bertagnoli (1964 Ford Thunderbolt) before class runoffs.

During early rounds in class, Geary Bates had a .004 reaction time in his NSS/B 1967 Ford Fairlane and in his 1965 Dodge Coronet, eventual winner Donnie Wilson went .008 and 11.003@116.74 in NSS/C.

In the F/X class final, Tom Boehm in the B/FX ‘Blue Byou’ 1965 Dodge Coronet gave up 0.25 in handicap and a .019 to .179 reaction time disadvantage to Joe Midile Jr.’s 1964 Dodge C/FX. But Boehm prevailed at the stripe by posting a perfect 9.500@131.18 pass.

But the best belonged to Jimmy Ray of Atoka, Tennessee, who clocked a perfect run in the second round of Sunday eliminations, going .000 and 11.000@121.39 in his NSS/C 1965 Chevelle Malibu.

—————————————————————————–

However, the most remarkable story of the event might be that of Joe Ewing, who lined up against the 1964 Ford Thunderbolt of Skip Koester in the NSS/B class final just before 8 p.m. Saturday evening. The entire program was running late due to a mid-day rain delay.

In his 1963 Dodge 330 with a push button automatic transmission, Ewing felt something wasn’t quite right as he came out of the water box following a routine burnout. Seemingly normal, though, he rolled into the pre-stage beam and then shifted into neutral and did a free-rev cleanout,

But when he pushed the button for first gear, nothing happened. “I couldn’t stage, the car wouldn’t move,” he said.

With time for a solution quickly disappearing, Ewing made a cycle through the complete shift pattern and when he punched the drive button again, the car moved forward and he was able to stage.

After giving up .014 on the ‘Tree, the pass felt normal Ewing said and he edged Koester 10.501@124.38 to 10.496@126.42 for the victory.

However, after clearing the track and getting onto the return road, again the car wouldn’t move. With most NSS racers already at the 7 p.m. awards dinner, no help was available and Ewing was forced to abandon the car and walk back to his pit.

Following dinner and with the car towed back to the pits, Ewing took on the considerable work of removing the transmission, which was completed after midnight.

The next morning’s inspection revealed the drive ears on the front fluid pump had broken. After acquiring a new pump, Ewing reinstalled the transmission just in time to make the call for first round of eliminations.
“Seems like the cycle through allowed the ears to jam at a place just enough to hang on and complete the run,” said Ewing, one fortunate racer.
