Time to Think About 2010 Wall Calendars

While the 2009 Wall Calendars are still selling like hot cakes, it is time to think of getting your NSS or NMC in the 2010 Calendar. These are high quality Wall Calendars that not only promote NSS and NMC racing by having 100s on the walls of cubicles, dens, kitchens, garages, and trailers — but it also helps pay the bills of hosting this site.

Only the best 13 NSS photos and the best 13 NMC photos make it to the Wall Calendars. I and my daughter took many of the photos for the 2009 Wall Calendar — but there are only so many events we go to, and it is hard to take photos and also race. the car During the 2009 racing season, if you have a worthy track photo please have it digitally scanned  (Kinkos if you don’t have a good scanner) at the highest resolution possible (but at least 300 DPI) and email it to me (attach the file) at davetheoldhippie@gmail.com with particulars of you and the car.

If you have a good digital SLR camera and a telephoto lens, see if you can get someone to take photos of your (and other in your class) car. The photos below were taken with a Canon D30, 150mm lens, and I was sitting in the top row of the bleachers just slightly ahead of the starting line. I set the program to speed, and when both cars stage I hold the shutter button halfway down to focus and set lighting. As soon as the car takes off I hold the shutter down and average about 3-4 photos per launch.

Here’s the Important Part

Give me the photo file right from the camera. Don’t try to crop, don’t play with the hue or saturation, and don’t resave — as the compression from resaving a JPG file will cause ghosting — especially in reds. I need to be able to crop the photo to 9.5: X 11.0 at 200DPI. I can’t use anything less than that and have a calendar to the high standards expected of me. Center the car in the image and have it take up about 2/3 of the width — so there is room to crop without cutting off the car.

Here’s to hoping your car is featured in the 2010 Wall Calendar.

Living the Dream

http://www.nssracing.com/images/texasthunder/tt01.jpg

One can only dream of having their race car immortalized as a 1:18 scale model — Mark Artis and Dan Bell are living the dream!

1963-1/2 Ford Galaxie 500 “Texas Thunder” Drag Car

The 1963-1/2 Ford Galaxie is owned by Dan Bell, driven by Mark Artis, and the crew chief is Richard Bell.  It was built in 1997 and has since been campaigned across the U.S. racing in Nostalgia Super Stock.  Some highlights are class wins at Cordova, Illinois and Memphis, Tennessee, and the 2006/07 overall championship in the Texas Outsiders Racing Series.  The car with an extensively modified 427 FE engine has a best effort to date of 9.63 at 140 mph in the quarter mile.

This model is 1:18 scale, diecast metal with plastic parts, Sun Star 1471, introduced in December 2008.  The exterior color red with race day graphics, a chrome grille, window trim, wipers, door handles, body side moldings, light bezels, and accents, and silver rims with blackwall treads on the front and drag slicks on the rear.  The detailed interior color is red with black trim, chrome and silver accents, and features a roll cage with a removed back seat, racing shell bucket seats with a detailed racing harness, a floor mounted 4-speed shifter, a detailed dash with readable gauges, and a dash mounted tach and shift light.

The model has a detailed chassis, suspension and exhaust system with tube headers, an opening hood with a tear-drop shaped dome/air scoop, a nicely detailed 484 cubic inch V8 racing engine, opening doors, opening trunk with a fuel cell and battery box, adjustable steering, and rotating wheels with soft rubber tires.  The model is mounted on a black plastic base with a vehicle identification label in a window style box.  The model is factory mint/new in box, direct from the manufacturer’s shipping case.

There is a new classified ad web site with categories for race parts, and car parts of all makes — which are also used in racing. Anyone can place free classified ads with up to six photos (uploaded from their computer) per ad.

I personally uploaded ads for (Mostly Mopar) new aluminum block and dozens of iron blocks; new race pistons and rods; new electric water pumps and oil pans; new MSD Distributors and fabricated valve covers; Billet transmission drum and transmission cores; heads and cranks (new and used); carburetors and a whole lot more. Even complete racing engines built by Damon Kuhn of Diamondback Engines. All cheaper than you can get elsewhere.

You are invited to both check out the ads already placed — and to place you own by clicking here.

When you visit you will not only notice categories for various makes of cars for sale, various makes of car parts for sale, and many racing sub-categories — but categories for trucks, trailers, motor homes, boats, motorcycles, memorabilia, employment, books, movies — and just about anything else a person might buy or sell.

Why not take a few minutes and grab your digital camera for a stroll through your garage, shop, attic, and/or shed. Your junk may be someone else’s treasure. Turn it into cash! This is completely free, there are no strings attached, and frankly I would appreciate your help with building this site by listing your items (or services offered) for sale.

This is the same site that hosts our “Driver’s Lounge” — a NSS Driver’s forum. The forum is useful for getting up to date information regarding the NSS class — and opinions on the rule interpretations. If you haven’t stopped by for a little visit — please consider doing so.

And Earn Money for You or Your Favorite Charity.

There is a free service called Squidoo that has a very kool product. In about 30 minutes, anyone — regardless of their computer experience — can build a free web page (Lens) of their Nostalgia Super Stock Car and team, complete with photos and videos. An example of my Big Red Ram can be found at www.squidoo.com/bigredram

The cool part is that when people visit your web page (referred to as a Lens) and click on a banner of an advertiser, you earn revenue. You can either have that revenue deposited into your Paypal account monthly — or select the charity for it to be donated to.

Another example of Squidoo lens is one that I whipped up in less than 15 minutes for the www.NSS-Monster.com site. You can check it out at www.squidoo.com/nostalgiasuperstock.

Please take a moment to click on those two links. If you like the concept — then roll a brother a bone and click the 5th star at the top of the page. If you would like to make a lens of your NSS Car & Team — there is a “Create A Lens” button at the bottom of the page to click to do so. Click that sucker and give it a try — what do you have to lose? You will find that it is too easy – and that you can earn some monthly change or donate it to a worthy charity.

Once you do a lens of your car, tell the rest of us the internet address at http://www.conservativeoldhippie.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1729 and we’ll come visit it, and rank it 5-stars (so it makes it up higher on the search list). If you have any questions, post them in that thread and we’ll get them answered for you.

This is a way to have a little fun, promote your car, promote the sport, and earn a little pocket change. You will notice that on those two Lens that I promote the NSS-Monster site with a listing of the posts made at www.nss-monster.com. That’s all done automatically with what is called a RSS Reed. Just click the RSS model for your lens and put the web address http://www.nss-monster.com and it will display and update automatically. You can also install a Cafe Press module on your lens — and help out a brother with listing the NSS Wall Calendars on your lens. It helps build context for your lens — and helps promote interest in NSS Racing. Again, click the two links, below to get an idea of a couple of NSS lens — and then create one for your car.

www.squidoo.com/nostalgiasuperstock

www.squidoo.com/bigredram

Also check the NSS-Monster site for the 2009 racing dates, and the 2009 NSS Racing rule revisions.

NMCA Has Announced Its 2009 Calendar

Discussions on this schedule at: http://www.conservativeoldhippie.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7316#post7316

  • WOOHOO — No New Jersey. They instead replaced it with Maple Grove. No more pitting behind your trailer or outside the track, no more having to leave an armed guard at your trailer when you make a pass!

  • Atlanta was replaced with North Carolina. Loved Atlanta — but I think this is the new track in Charlotte.

  • No conflict with the Monster Mopar Weekend. Excellent!

  • Two races in August — None in September. I can live with that.

Update your calendar.

I got a call from Bud Cochran last week, saying the he and DW hadn’t seen many updates to the NSS-Monster site lately (or my emails for that matter) — and were wondering if I was still going to go forward with promoting the NSS class of racing through the site. Bud also updated me on his neck surgery, the Thunderbolt he’s building, DW’s engine woes (windowed it in Memphis), and other news.

Well a couple explanations on why work on the site slowed down — and a couple of things on what has changed, and what to expect in the future.

First, the season has ended — and so there isn’t too much more news than what had already been reported. However, as news on rule changes and schedule dates change — I’ll post them on the site. A Heads up, while I’ve yet to see the rule change in writing yet — I was told that NMCA and Nostalgia Super Stock National Association were going to clarify the transmission rules for A/FX, AA/FX, and AAA/FX to specifically exclude Lenco and planetary type of transmissions. My understanding is that those three “A” classes may use a 5-speed clutchless like a Liberty. I only report the rules as I understand them — and am not the person to take rules changes as Gospel — so you may wish to clarify with the NMCA or NSSNA rules committee — or someone who you trust to know the rules to the letter. I intend to move to A/FX for 2009 — and bought a new Jerico 4-speed, which requires left foot action all of the way down the track — and hope that Old School is still doable for my car bumping up another class.

Secondly, I’ve needed Kidney surgery for quite some time now — but business and racing put it off until November 12th — a couple of days ago. While the surgery went well and successful — it was a major and serious surgery that dictated that I should get all of my business and personal ducks in a row prior to surgery. I’ll still be in bed (albeit with a notebook computer) for another week or so. When I recover from this one — I need to go have the center ligament of my rotator cuff reattached, after pulling it from lifting a generator out of my trailer. I’m trying to get all of these issues cleared up before racing season starts, as I intend to run all but NJ in NMCA for 2009.

If you had received news and photos from my ball busting son that this was a sex change operation — rest assure that I am still all man and he will be running from me, trying to retain his manhood, when I do get out of bed! Anyway — health issues have slowed things down some on the site — a will for a little while.

SOME BIG NEWS TO REPORT:

Part of getting my ducks in a row – was to redesign my two most Popular web sites. The reason was that they were both running on very old and hard to maintain applications – and I wanted to make sure that they ran faster and were easier to maintain in the event I wouldn’t be able to administer to them for awhile.

One is a Mopar only site that went by the name of MoPower Style — and it hosted the old NSS-Monster forums, which some of you frequented. The redesigned site now goes by MoPar Style. The old site is still up (but inactive) for reference — but will close at the end of the year and forward visitors to the new site.

The other big site was OldHippie.com, which was a muti-make American Automotive web site, with some other topics like politics, guns, boats, planes, motor homes, motorcycles, Texas, Humor, etc sprinkled in — is separate forums. All of these topics are not co-mingled — meaning it is easy to discuss topics you wish to discuss — and avoid those you do not. The new version of this site is now called Conservative Old Hippie — with the old site still up (but not active) as an archive until the end of the year.

I mention this because the NSS-Moster Driver’s Lounge has moved from the Mopar Site — to the Multi-Make site. This was done in an effort to encourage the Ford, Chevy, Buick, AMC, and Pontiac guys to post there. Yes, hidden in that site is a political forum and even a Christian Chapel, and politics and religion are topics many wish to not discuss, but those forums are so easy to avoid that you’ll never know they are there if you want to stick strictly to the board specializing in NSS Racing. This is the perfect place to ask rules questions, update us on your car, discuss events — or just swap lies. I ask you to please visit the NSS-Monster Driver’s Lounge — even if you’ve never posted to a bulletin board before. This is real simple stuff, and even the worst and slowest typists can participate with discussions with their NSS Racing buds. Just try it — and you will find it to be a beneficial experience.

Tell us what’s happening with your team — and what you intend to do next. Click here to see the thread discussing all of the changes that Big Red Ram is going through right now at Texas Thunder — along with some photos. There are also threads (Forum speak for topics) where you can post and see racing photos, racing videos, rule changes (there are a couple), a calendar of events, etc. Please participate.

Also, the 2009 NSS wall Calendar is out — plus the 2008 and 2007 calendars have been re-dated for 2009.

Progress is coming along real well on my 60 Plymouth wagon car — and will hopefully be ready to shake down midyear and race at the Monster. I’ll be posting more about how that is coming along in the NSS-Driver’s Lounge — but I’m really expecting that some of you other drivers will also participate.

Nostalgia Super Stock drivers/owners have been doing its job with bringing out faster and more interesting NSS cars every year — and the purses have no where kept up with it. NSS needs some organized promoting if we’re to command the respect currently only given to cookie cutter Mustangs and Camaros. The NSS-Monster web site offers the opportunity for us as racers to put our heads together get the word out that it was cars like our that made drag racing what it is today. Let be Pro-Active — and not apathetic with promoting Nostalgia Super Stock.

I hope to see y’all on line and at the track.

NMCA 2008 Finals – Nostalgia Super Stock

October 13, 2008

Dave ‘The Old Hippie” Schultz

Deb, Dallas, Hope and I left Houston Wednesday at 2Pm and pulled into a WalMart parking lot (they let motorhomes spend the night in their parking lots) about 50 miles SW of West Memphis. Got up leisurely late Thursday, showered, stopped to drain the waste tanks, top of with diesel, and arrived at the track at about 10AM. Sat in the Staging Area (about 40 rigs back) until they opened the gates at noon.

We got the pit set up and teched the car in — but passed on making any T&T runs Thursday night. Friday from noon to 3 PM they had TT and we made one pass (9.524@144MPH) to get the cob-webs shook out of the driver (the car usually doesn’t need that). Car was fine — but we had to thrash on the rig when the fresh water pump died and 4 people needed showers! One was located across town and Dan Bell gave Dallas a ride to fetch it. At 3PM, NSS made their first qualifying pass — and I broke out with a 9.434. The track was hooking good and it was cooler than I’d thought. We put the car away and the Jack Daniels flowed as we celebrated Dallas’ 21st Birthday.

Saturday morning at 10:15, NSS was called up for its second Qualifying pass. We had 24 cars in line. I ripped off a 9.526 @ 145.96mph — which that MPH held up as the fastest (although there was at least one car running A/FX) MPH for NSS. At 5PM (or so) they called up NSS for the last qualifying — and I decided to try to better the 9.52. A 25th car, Terry Lamphier, made it for that round (his first attempt) — assuring the Top Qualifier was going to get a first Round Bye. It was right after the damn Jet car had run — and while they re-prep the first 400′ after it — it sure doesn’t help us 4-speeds on skinny slicks skating on unburned JP4 jet fuel that gets fogged on the track. My car broke loose on the 2-3 shift and got out of the groove. I was just getting back into the groove for my 3-4 shift — and the rear came around on me again. Despite staying in it the whole time — (and using all of the lane with tires spinning) I did a 9.762 @139MPH on my B/FX index. Later that night, while we were enjoying the gastromac delights of Dan Bell’s Paint Stripper Chili (which our families also got to enjoy the aroma of (as will our launderer) for the next 24 or so hours) — the Qualifying order was announced as:

According to the NMCA Points chart, DW Hopkins was in 3rd, I was 55 points behind in 4th, and Skip Koester was 5 points behind me in 5th. I needed to go one round more than DW and not let Skip go one round ahead of me, for me to get 3rd.

Sunday ROUND 1 had me line up against Joe Midize in his 64 C/FX Dodge. I’d had first round red lights at Atlanta and Milan (-.0001 – yes 3 zeros and missed by 1/10,000 second) and was gun shy — so I took a late light, ran down Joe, paced him, and put a fender on him at the finish. Mark Artis turned on the Beer Light against another 63 Ford. Donnie and Steve Wilson had a double breakout — but Donnie by a lesser amount. Mike Davis broke out against Barry Camp’s C/FX 409. Bill White had a 9.249 break out against Cal’s 65 GTO. Moss got a Break Bye over Ray. Craig Powell’s white Thunderbolt broke out against Skip’s white Thunderbolt (damn (lol)). Willshire red lit against Lamphier. DW sprayed parts out of his oil pan at the line against Morris. Double breakout between Duell and Ava — but Ava by a lesser amount. Double-O Joe beat Gorell on the tree with a .007 RT. TD Holland had a Broke Bye and Millward had the Top Qualifier Bye.

Skip got a Broke Bye when Cal’s GTO couldn’t make it to the line after having a piston kiss a spark plug and water in the oil (damn again lol). Moss got a Bye.

In ROUND 3, I red lit against Ava and aired the car out for my best time slip to date. Moss and skip had a Double break out — but Skip by a lesser amount (damn the third time). I believe that gives Skip Koester third Place in the Points, me 4th, and DW Hopkins 5th. Double-O Joe Ewing put TD Holland on the trailer  — but Ole TD still comes away with the 2009 Points Championship — Congrats! Lamphier got a Bye.

Congratulations to all. We left the track at about 9PM and got to Houston 14 hours later. This was my first time ever running a series of any type — and I had a blast. I intend to do it again next year — and to do better that 4th place. In the couple years since I started racing — I’ve moved Big Red Ram from 10.5 to 10.0 2006, to 9.75 in 2007, to 9.50 in 2008 — and now I intend to move up to A/FX in 2009. The car is going to Texas Thunder Wednesday to have Mark Artis perform some upgrading and fine tuning to it — while I go to the hospital to have some fine tuning carving done on my right kidney. I’m hoping a month later we’ll both running a little healthier.

As a side note — a little birdie told me that there will be a couple of end of the year NSS rules changes made — one including transmissions. Please check www.nss-monster.com as that’s where the rules will be posted when they get to me for posting. Also remember to check out the NSS Wall Calendars, T-shirts (Sizes to XXXXL for us full-figure guys), and other kool NSS items in the Gift Shop. http://www.cafepress.com/texasbigbird/6039006 & http://www.cafepress.com/texasbigbird/5677660

Dave Duell Classic – September 2008

Nostalgia Super Stock Nationals

Gateway International Raceway

Diligent driving leads to victory for Lee

By Bob Wilkiewicz
Nostalgia Super Stock National Association

MADISON, Ill. – Driving in a range of consistent reaction times and taking advantage of slower responses by opponents, Albert Lee (Corda) of Elk Mound, Wisconsin won the Nostalgia Super Stock Eliminator title at the third annual Dave Duell NSS Nationals during Monster Mopar Weekend at Gateway International Raceway September 19-21, 2008.

Posting reaction times of .050, .027, .043, .025, .048 and .054, respectively, Lee (Corda) also received a red light victory in the second round on his way to the championship. Meanwhile, four of his opponents posted reaction times ranging from .107 to .218, including an average of .154 over the last three rounds.

Lee’s (Corda) 1964 Plymouth was also a consistent performer, running near the NSS/B 10.50 index when needed. His most difficult race came in the third round against the NSS/C 1964 Plymouth driven by Jim Guy of Hilliard, Ohio, who pressured the winner to a 10.501@121.95mph pass.

Damon Kuhn of Needville, Texas in his NSS/A 1961 Plymouth named ‘Fugly’ also took advantage of opponents’ mistakes to claim runner-up honors. He advanced via redlights in each of the first three rounds.

Then Kuhn picked up another easy win in the semifinals when Charlie Kuenster of Lancaster, Wisconsin also lit the red eye with his 1959 Chevrolet running in NSS/D. In previous rounds, Kuenster was close to the ‘Tree with reaction times of .043, .008, .002 and .030.

Kuhn posted a 10.004@135.18 in the second round for his best performance of the day.

Lonny Meyer of Noblesville, Indiana was the other semifinalist, running the Meyer Family Racing 1964 Plymouth in NSS/C.

Meyer posted runs of .017 and 11.010, .043 and 10.987, and .002 and 10.975 in the first three rounds. Then he received the benefit of a red light in the fourth round before falling to Lee (Corda).

——————————————————————————

The entry roster for NSS reached a new high for the event with 71 cars passing tech despite being two weeks later on the calendar and with two schedule conflicts drawing away a number of other NSS cars. The previous mark was 66 cars, set in 2007.

——————————————————————————

Paul Habura of Addison, Illinois set low elapsed time and top speed of the event for NSS in the ‘Keeping The Faith’ 1963 Plymouth Belevdere, which is an original factory Max Wedge car. In addition, the machine was remarkable in its consistency.

In the first pair down the track in time trials on Friday, Habura posted an 8.858@150.65. Then after going 8.872@151.10 during the second session, he ran out to an 8.867@151.66 on Saturday before class eliminations.

—————————————————————————-

Several other top driving performances were also seen during the event, including .001 reaction times by Jim Guy and Kurt TeVault (1965 Plymouth) along with an .002 from Dan Brewer (1964 Plymouth) on Friday. Brewer also clocked a .001 reaction time in the first round of Sunday’s eliminations.

On Saturday, Dennis Spurgeon (1969 Dodge Dart) and last year’s winner Russ Berens (1967 Plymouth) posted side-by-side .001 reactions followed with a .000 by Marty Bertagnoli (1964 Ford Thunderbolt) before class runoffs.

During early rounds in class, Geary Bates had a .004 reaction time in his NSS/B 1967 Ford Fairlane and in his 1965 Dodge Coronet, eventual winner Donnie Wilson went .008 and 11.003@116.74 in NSS/C.

In the F/X class final, Tom Boehm in the B/FX ‘Blue Byou’ 1965 Dodge Coronet gave up 0.25 in handicap and a .019 to .179 reaction time disadvantage to Joe Midile Jr.’s 1964 Dodge C/FX. But Boehm prevailed at the stripe by posting a perfect 9.500@131.18 pass.

But the best belonged to Jimmy Ray of Atoka, Tennessee, who clocked a perfect run in the second round of Sunday eliminations, going .000 and 11.000@121.39 in his NSS/C 1965 Chevelle Malibu.

—————————————————————————–

However, the most remarkable story of the event might be that of Joe Ewing, who lined up against the 1964 Ford Thunderbolt of Skip Koester in the NSS/B class final just before 8 p.m. Saturday evening. The entire program was running late due to a mid-day rain delay.

In his 1963 Dodge 330 with a push button automatic transmission, Ewing felt something wasn’t quite right as he came out of the water box following a routine burnout. Seemingly normal, though, he rolled into the pre-stage beam and then shifted into neutral and did a free-rev cleanout,

But when he pushed the button for first gear, nothing happened. “I couldn’t stage, the car wouldn’t move,” he said.

With time for a solution quickly disappearing, Ewing made a cycle through the complete shift pattern and when he punched the drive button again, the car moved forward and he was able to stage.

After giving up .014 on the ‘Tree, the pass felt normal Ewing said and he edged Koester 10.501@124.38 to 10.496@126.42 for the victory.

However, after clearing the track and getting onto the return road, again the car wouldn’t move. With most NSS racers already at the 7 p.m. awards dinner, no help was available and Ewing was forced to abandon the car and walk back to his pit.

Following dinner and with the car towed back to the pits, Ewing took on the considerable work of removing the transmission, which was completed after midnight.

The next morning’s inspection revealed the drive ears on the front fluid pump had broken. After acquiring a new pump, Ewing reinstalled the transmission just in time to make the call for first round of eliminations.
“Seems like the cycle through allowed the ears to jam at a place just enough to hang on and complete the run,” said Ewing, one fortunate racer.
